Pablo Picasso once said, "God is really the only other artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant and the cat. He has no real style, He just goes on trying other things." If that's the case, there's one more thing we can learn from the Almighty.
We often waste hours flipping through magazines trying to decipher what fads we can include into our everyday style. What is personal style anyways? What dictates one's style? Is it merely the outfits one puts together in the mornings, or does it involve more than that?
I believe that style is an embodiment of the senses. It is the happiness we feel when we curl up in our faux fur wraps while enjoying a caramel macchiato. It's the contentment we experience when we see ourselves five pounds thinner in our new dark denim skinny jeans. It's the pleasure we gain from the smell of Chanel No.5 that surprisingly lingered on our necks throughout the day. Your style is not what makes you, but what enhances you. Therefore, just as any other enhancement you could make to yourself, style is not monotonous.
Most of us, unknowingly, have more than one style. Sure we can put labels on the style that we favor most, but that doesn't eliminate other styles from our fashion repertoire. Instead of labeling our styles however, we should be style thespians. That way we can take on one style, be that character for a moment, own it fully and make no excuses for our extravagance, then quickly drop that style and inherit another. Man is an ever changing creature, so hone in on your inner style maverick, take different ones on and see how much more satisfying your year in fashion can become.
